ABOUT THESE BENCHMARKS
Why pitch speed benchmarks vary
Benchmarks differ significantly between rec ball and travel ball at every age level. A 60 mph 12U pitcher might dominate a rec league and struggle in travel ball. These ranges are based on competitive averages — not maximums — and should be used as context, not ceilings.
Velocity vs. command — what scouts actually watch
At every youth level, a pitcher who throws 5 mph slower but hits the corners consistently will outperform a harder thrower who walks batters. College coaches and scouts prioritize command, repeatable mechanics, and durability over peak velocity — especially below 16U.
